The Hague, 29 October 2008
I take this opportunity to convey my condolences and sympathies to the victims and their family members whom have been affected by today’s terrorist attacks in Somaliland and Puntland.
I strongly condemn today’s terrorist attack against national and international institutions and appeal for unity and calm in Somaliland and Puntland in order to overcome these terrible terrorist attacks.
Somaliland has been able to effectively reduce the threats of terrorism throughout the past years and should continue to do so with international assistance. Puntland should be encouraged by this latest terrorist attack to strengthen its security policies to eradicate terrorism and extremism within its territory in order to maintain peace and stability in the Northern parts of the Somali region.
The problems and differences within Somalia can only be solved trough a broad process of reconciliation that includes all stakeholders to ensure that the legitimate aspirations of the sovereign communities in the Somali region can be fulfilled.
